Always a great place to come to. The last time I visited, it was in October and the heated lamps outside were definitely needed. Our server did such a great job checking in on us from time to time, making sure everything was going well. Honestly, every dish that was ordered was fantastic- from starters to pasta to the meat dish. We all loved the pasta dishes at this restaurant. When I have friends visit, I always try to bring them here and it never disappoints!
Had a great dinner here! The staff was fantastic, and we lucked out with half-off cocktails on Tuesday. We loved both the Smoke Swindler and Everything Nice--delicious and a great deal! We started with Sea Wolf Sourdough, a favorite, and tried the marrow bone, which was a bit underwhelming, but hey, more bread is always a plus. The cauliflower dish was a standout--the goat cheese and beet made it so bright and flavorful. We tried the Agnolotti which was tasty. The Paccheri only had three shrimp pieces--would have loved a bit more there. Overall, a solid experience with some real highlights!
it's been years (maybe decades?) since i've been to an ethan stowell restaurant but a friend was in town and staying on lower queen anne so i decided we'd go up the hill and try how to cook a wolf. when i went to make the reservation, i was a little hesitant to do so in the outdoors booths despite the disclaimer that they're covered and have heat. with the increasing rain and wind in late october, i wasn't sure it would be a pleasant situation for an out of towner but it turned out just fine, so i'd say that no indoor availability should not deter you from making an outdoor online reservation. we chose 4-5 appetizers and everything was superb. sea wolf sourdough bread never, ever disappoints and the fennel butter was delicious! the olives were great to pick at and had good flavor since they also come with garlic and tiny red peppers. the ahí crudo was great, the cauliflower with beet puree was super tasty and the burrata was amazing. by the time our pasta main dishes arrived i was plenty satiated but thankfully still had room to spare. my friend chose the oxtail gnocchi and i had the fall special with butternut squash, brown butter and sage. both were gobbled up. we ended with a scoop of each of the gelato options which are usually served separately but since we could decide on one, we asked for both. ethan stowell establishments have developed a pnw reputation for a reason and this meal did not disappoint. it was fresh, great flavors served promptly and by staff who know just how to gauge if you need something or want to be left to the company you arrived with. my friend was in town for the antiquarian book fair and i would highly encourage people who are on lower queen anne for an event at seattle center to brave a walk or drive up the hill because i've always believed the top of queen anne has better food offerings than the lower half; this experience cemented that thought.
Best food and service. The first place I have ever been to that they care about your special celebration. It was our anniversary and they brought champagne for us to the table. Amazing food as well. Was soo happy with our experience
We had a really pleasant dinner here at How To Cook a Wolf, the service was perfect and the servers were super attentive. The quality of cuisine scaled with that standard too. As evident of the photos I attached we absolutely destroyed our meal. No survivors.
One of my favorite restaurants to visit for any occasion, recently came here with friends from out of town. I think we ordered almost everything on the menu. The sourdough was always a favorite, also if you know the bruschetta. The pancetta was super juicy with the right amount of crisp. We enjoyed two orders of the gnocchi and the steak, surprisingly tender, and delicious. I was a little underwhelmed by the strawberries and cream, but still a nice touch after the meal.
The menu doesn't adequately convey the complexity of the food here. We had an outstanding meal in this cozy Queen Anne restaurant. Simple dishes like sourdough bread come alive with spreads featuring fennel or roasted garlic and balsamic. The "bruschetta" is actually crostinia spread with smoked fish dip. And, most stunning of all, a pappardelle was infused with orange zest, mint, and chili oil. Truly the best pasta dish I've ever had. Service by Martin was stellar. He was a great host, waiter, and informant about all of the dishes. The bar is turning out great cocktails, while the wine list leans more toward austere whites and international reds. While compact, the dining area is not overly noisy. Definitely exceeded our expectations.
Hadn't been here in awhile, so took my husband for Father's day brunch, since brunch is now an option! Service was great as usual. If it's a cool day you're probably better off sitting outside by the heaters, as inside was quite cool. My savory Dutch baby was delicious! Also good cappuccino and latte. My husband's porchetta(!) was very juicy and tender, and flavorful, but not of porchetta. No sign of the porchetta spices fennel, rosemary, garlic. We told our server, who checked with the kitchen, and said it was an aberration, took it off the bill. Poached eggs were perfect, and greens flavorful.
Fantastic anniversary meal at HTCAW. We were made comfortable outside with foot and table heating. Our waitress was nice and pleasant, even giving us tips to recreate the fantastical fennel pollen honey butter. We sat at 4:20 and a wrong app was sent and then we didn't have our water carafe returned (I went for one myself eventually)...no big deals but it happened. The bread is a must, just a delight all around. I would try something other than the cauliflower--I like mine more roasted, though it was a beautiful plate. The kale salad is tender and flavorful while also being too salty for my taste with the bread crumbs. The pickled cherries were delicious. The mains were what brought us in and would def bring us back--no notes on the steak combo. The halibut was perfectly cooked, just less of those breadcrumbs in the future...so many salty breadcrumbs. The panna cotta was creamy, just like at Tavolata, and while we asked for the compote on the side, it wasn't a rhubarb compote but a raspberry and blueberry compote. The cheesecake had lovely crispies that were the star of the dish. The chocolate is nice. We will return here for sure and are inspired to branch out into more ESR places. (Mkt was one of the best meals of my life during SRW and introduced me to ESR but they're no longer in the group.)
